Lana Springs is a Cefas regestered fish farm situated 7 miles east of Holsworthy in Devon, developed in 2004 specifically for the production of fast growing english carp. This location was chosen because of its wet and warm climate plus its natural spring water supply. This natural water supply is absolutely essential to ensure a disease free environment, most fish farms rely on rivers and streams to fill their lakes, but these can contain harmfull parasites and disease plus a whole host of unwanted water quality based issues, our spring water supply is free of all such problems thus giving our fish a better environment in which to thrive.
The biosecurity measures here on site are second to none, we do not deal in other peoples unwanted fish or allow any other fish or persons on site that could potentially introduce disease. Cefas inspect our site and our records twice yearly and have never found anything other than healthy well kept fish, they very often comment that their work would be so much easier if all fish farms were kept as well as Lana Springs. This gives our customers the total peace of mind when stocking fish from our farm, the last thing you want to do is introduce fish into you lake that could be carrying an infectious disease or potentially harmfull parasites.
The whole perimeter of the 54 acre fish farm is fenced to stop otters and mink damaging our precious stock, the lakes containing our younger fish are protected from avian predators to stop unwanted damage or losses. We have planted broad leaf trees on any land unsuitable for fish farming, this along with a substantial solar panel system has helped to make the fish farm carbon neutral.
We have crossed the Emperor strain for their huge growth rates and the Horseshoe/Orchid strain for their outstanding beauty, coupled with their hard fighting characteristics and long life span the Lana Springs strain is in my opinion the very best available in the uk today. In the right waters these carp are capable of reaching that magical 50lb barrier.
Emperor lakes is a syndicate water i fished a number of years ago and has produced some huge fish, the largest growing to over 58lb, it has produced no less than 6 different 50lb plus fish and many many more 40s. The syndicate lake at Emperor lakes is 6 acres in size and contains the best fish i have ever come across in regards to growth rates, when you consider a 6 acre lake containing approx 120 fish with 25 of them over the magical 40lb barrier, plus another 2 fish that are over 50lb, we are talking about a very special water and a very special strain of fish, [with the permission of the the owner] to introduce this strain we brought back eggs, hatched and grew the fry on, each year we graded them keeping the very best fish for another season, once they had reached maturity we selected the very best of each strain and crossed them, by crossing the two strains we have got the best of both worlds, huge growth rates and beautiful looking fish, from lightly scaled fish with big shoulders and deep bodies to beautiful heavily scaled fish.
Each year we spawn hundreds of thousands of carp then regularly grade them so we end up with the absolute cream of the crop, the fish we now have on site are excetional to say the least, and have exceeded our expectations, growth rates are better than either of the origonal strains, and with looks to go with it, we have a huge variety of carp just take a look at the galleries to veiw just some of our stunning fish.
Growth rates can vary greatly as much depends on the water quality, stocking density and availability of a good quality food source, stocked at relatively low densities in rich waters these fish can grow very fast, once above 10lb they are quite easly capable of putting on 6lb per year, in fact ive had some fish do 8lb per year and on sensible diets. All our fish are fed with our own quality carp pellets, the farm ponds are treated with chalk or ground limestone each year to neutralizes any acidity that builds up in the lake bed, this also increases the amount of calcium in the system making the lakes rich in natural food so the fish get a good balanced diet. The health of our stock is always put first, its pointless growing fish super fast on silly high protein high oil diets only to have them die at an early age, our aim is to product superior quality carp that are healthy and long lived.
